Jan Johnsen – How to Place Five Rocks

Jan Johnsen, an admired landscape designer and author, lived in Kyoto, Japan and worked at a Japanese landscape architecture firm in Osaka. In her fascinating Powerpoint talk, she offers inspiring landscape design tips that can be used in both residential and commercial outdoor spaces. She also explains, in clear terms, how to place five rocks. 

As principal of Johnsen Landscapes & Pools, Jan is known is known for her advocacy of the beneficial effects of nature and gardens upon our well-being. She is the author of five books, including her popular, Gardentopia- Design Basics for Creating Beautiful Outdoor Spaces (Countryman Press).

 

Jan’s contributions to the field earned her the Award of Distinction from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) in 2019. With formal training in landscape architecture, planning, and horticulture, Jan’s career has spanned the globe—from Japan to Hawaii to Kenya. She has taught at Columbia University and the New York Botanical Garden, where she was honored as ‘Instructor of the Year.’ You can also find her musings on her popular substack page, Gardentopia.
