Course Description

This hands-on course introduces students to the expressive possibilities of printmaking without the use of a traditional printing press. Focusing on monotypes and relief printing techniques, participants will explore accessible, low-tech methods that can be done in a studio, classroom, or home setting. Students will learn how to create one-of-a-kind monotype prints using simple tools and materials, as well as relief prints from linoleum, soft-cut, or found textures. Techniques will include inking, layering, mark-making, hand burnishing, and experimentation with pressure, paper, and ink to achieve a range of visual effects. Emphasis is placed on process, exploration, and creative problem-solving rather than perfection. This course is suitable for beginners with no prior printmaking experience, as well as artists looking to expand their practice with portable, press-free techniques. By the end of the course, will have a solid foundation in non-press printmaking methods that can be easily continued beyond the classroom. Students should bring paper (see supply list) and all other materials will be provided.
