Course Description

Discover the basics of bookbinding in this hands-on workshop. Students will learn simple techniques for creating their own soft-cover books while exploring the materials, tools, and processes that bring a handmade book together. Through demonstrations and guided projects, students will learn how to prepare and fold pages, create a soft cover, sew and bind the book, and add finishing touches. We will make three different book structures: drum leaf binding, pamphlet binding and a multiple signature binding. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. This course is a wonderful introduction to the craft and offers plenty of opportunity to experiment with papers, covers, and personal design choices while creating a unique handmade book to take home. Basic materials will be provided, and students are welcome to bring their own images, text, or art materials to incorporate into their work. There will be a short break, so if you wish bring a snack or light lunch.
