Course Description

Discover the basics of bookbinding in this hands-on three-week course. Students will learn simple techniques for creating their own soft-cover books while exploring the materials, tools, and processes that bring a handmade book together. Through demonstrations and guided projects, students will learn how to prepare and fold pages, create a soft cover, sew and bind the book, and add finishing touches. We will make three different book structures: drum leaf binding, pamphlet binding, and multiple signature binding. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. This course is a wonderful introduction to the craft and offers plenty of opportunity to experiment with papers, covers, and personal design choices while creating a unique handmade book to take home. Basic materials will be provided, and students are welcome to bring their own images, text, or art materials to incorporate into their work.
