Course Description

Discover the exciting process of relief printmaking in this hands-on three-week course. Working with a printing press, students will learn the fundamentals of linocut, from developing a design and carving a block to inking and pulling successful prints. The course will begin with black-and-white printing before moving into color and reduction techniques, where a single block is progressively carved and printed to create a multi-colored image. The final week will focus on developing a personal project and creating a small edition of finished prints. Along the way, students will explore line, shape, texture, positive and negative space, and the distinctive qualities that make relief printing so engaging. Students should bring paper as listed on the supply list; all other materials will be provided. No previous printmaking experience is required.
