Course Description

This hands-on course introduces students to the fundamentals of printmaking while exploring the unique qualities and expressive effects that can be achieved with a printing press. Students will experiment with monotypes learning how to create one-of-a-kind prints. Explore the spontaneous and painterly world of monotype printing in this course. Using a variety of inking, mark-making, layering, and transfer techniques, students will create unique prints. Learn how to work with both additive and subtractive processes, experiment with texture and transparency, and discover how unexpected results can become part of the creative process. Projects will encourage experimentation with line, shape, color, texture, and composition, with opportunities to develop prints from simple studies into more finished works. No previous printmaking experience is necessary. This course is ideal for artists looking to explore a versatile, low-pressure printmaking process while embracing the happy accidents that make monotypes so compelling. Whether you are completely new to printmaking or looking to expand your artistic practice, this course offers a fun and accessible introduction to working with the press. Students should bring paper as listed on the supply list; all other materials will be provided. (No classes October 12 & 26)
