Poem about Miriam's role in the Exodus story and what her legacy can mean for us today.
Exodus
Sometimes
you have to part
the sea
To know where
to go
For land
to appear
To move
forward
It is said
when Moses parted the sea
Miriam carried the water
Mayim
Wherever they journeyed
For 40 years
Wandering
She brought the well to the desert
Mayim
A “cheers” to freedom
We lift a cup in her name
On Passover
Proposed and incorporated by the fluid ones
An addendum
An afterthought
Mayim
Still, she dances
Like water over-
flowing
singing
Mayim
When you time it
right
And get all your people
to commit
You can drown out
evil
Your Pharaohs will
go
down
and you will walk
free
Mayim
Mayim
Mayim
