In old growth forests, there are hubs of vast below ground networks of mycorrhiza fungi, forming the mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships between fungi and tree root. At the hubs stand the "Mother Trees", larger, very much older trees that rise above the rest of the forest and through this network, are connected and communicate with other trees and plants to manage resources in the forest.

Lisa Breznak’s series of sculptural tree projects each presents the vision, not of a survival-of-the-fittest competition but of a model of altruism, of helping nurture for all’s continued existence. The series installations of The Mother Trees is inspired by Canadian forestry scientist, professor, and conservationist, Dr. Suzanne Simard’s scientific writings first published in 2009, and her 2021 book Finding the Mother Tree.
