Heaven Come Down:

Tomoko Amaki Abe

Exhibition:
August 8-November 15, 2026
Opening Reception: August 9

Heaven Come Down brings together works by Tomoko Amaki Abe that move across paper, clay, wood, porcelain, and glass. Throughout the exhibition, transformation becomes both a process and a metaphor. Rather than existing in isolation, materials influence and translate one another, carrying the memory of another through casting, imprinting, layering, and transmutation. Instead of emphasizing contrast, the work explores coexistence, where boundaries soften and new relationships emerge.

The exhibition traces crossings between the natural and the manufactured, the fragile and the enduring, the opaque and the translucent, the visible and the invisible. These material exchanges reflect broader connections among humans, animals, plants, minerals, and time, suggesting that our bodies and environments are part of the same ongoing cycle of transformation. However, with ecological surroundings undergoing adverse changes and environmental boundaries becoming increasingly blurred, these perspectives also take on new sense of urgency.

Heaven Come Down suggests both the possibility that the sacred resides within the material world and the growing sense that the boundary between heaven and earth is collapsing as the changing environment reshapes the conditions of life. Throughout the exhibition, materials bear the traces of this instability while also imagining new forms of coexistence.
