About the Event
Jane Chang is equally at home with Western watercolor and Chinese brush painting. She brings to brush painting skills learned through years of study with master artist Aixinjueluo Hengy, descended from the Qing dynasty. In her painting Jane explores her personal relationship with nature. Her freehand, or xieyi, painting captures the chi, the lively spirit of her subjects with an economy of strokes. Her focus is on the inner spirit more than an exact mimicking of imagery. For the April meeting, Jane will show us ways to portray songbirds and branches, a wonderful subject to celebrate spring! The workshop is open to beginners as well as experienced brush artists.
Materials: Please bring some newspaper, some dishes to use as palettes, a container for water, and some paper towels. For those who have brush painting materials, please bring your rice paper, felt, Chinese or Japanese sumi-e black ink, colors, and brushes. (You will need a firm brush such as an Orchid-Bamboo or Mountain Horse brush as well as a smaller, detail brush.) Supplies will be available for purchase from Jane Chang for those who need them. Please contact Jane in advance if you will need materials (201) 889-3175. Feel free to contact Susan Lanzano if you have any questions (914) 762-1567.
