About the Event
A master of painting in the colorful Ling-nan style of Southern China, Frank Liao will show participants how to paint Chrysanthemums, one of the “Four Gentlemen in Chinese culture. Mr. Liao will show us how to draw a few different varieties of this “noble plant,” of which in China alone there are 7,000 different cultivars! Students will learn which brushes to use, how to use water, how to load the brush with color, and how to handle the brush to create strong and spontaneous movement and shapes. The workshop will enable students new to Chinese brush painting to gain some facility with the basics and will help more experienced artists to refine their skills. For those who stay for the workshop, Mr. Liao will do another demonstration, following which students will practice on their own and have the opportunity to be tutored individually.
