Arun Bose:
Holy Woman Holy Man
Curated by Mitche Kunzman
Exhibition:
August 30-November 16
It was at the famous Atelier 17 in Paris under the direction of Stanley William Hayter that master printmaker and painter Arun Bose (1934 – 2007) first encountered the complex technique of intaglio viscosity printing – which was to become his signature style for decades.
The artist was born in Dakka (Bangladesh) and moved at a young age with his family to Calcutta (Kolkata) India – nurtured there by the intense artistic climate of that great Bengali city. Later moving to New York he was a recipient of a John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship. In his heart he always carried his memories and love for India deep inside.
Arun Bose was a beloved teacher who often repeated the mantra-like words "Slowly Slowly" advising his students to allow the printing plate to develop – it must not be rushed – and to have patience.
The exhibition will feature beautiful examples of the artist's prints and paintings and will exhibit for the first time some of his original viscosity printing plates – on loan from the Bose Family collection – which were utilized by the artist to create his remarkable images.
