Course Description

In this playful clay workshop, young artists will create their own Wayne Thiebaud–inspired ceramic slice of cake boxes using hand building techniques. Students will learn how to shape and assemble clay slabs to form a small lidded box designed to look like a whimsical cake, complete with fun decorative details and imaginative character features. Children will explore texture, pattern, and sculptural elements as they add frosting-like designs, playful faces, and creative embellishments to make each cake box unique. Along the way, they will learn foundational ceramic skills such as building with slabs, attaching pieces securely, and working safely with clay tools. This workshop encourages creativity, storytelling, and hands-on experimentation in a supportive and fun studio environment. Perfect for beginners, it helps young makers build confidence while creating a functional keepsake they’ll be proud of. Clay pieces take four weeks to be fired and the school will notify you when the pieces are ready to be picked up. Please wear clothes that can get muddy and we suggest long hair should be worn up. All materials will be provided.
