This unidentified Cambodian woman with no hands or feet was photographed by me in July 2000 as she walked along the causeway at Angkor Wat. The checked scarf known as a ‘krama ‘ is an all purpose wrapper used for carrying babies and as a partial body covering in the SE Asian region. My travels to SE Asia took place during Monsoon months exploring archaeology, textiles and culture from my base living with my Thai host in Bangkok. During that time I was a member of the Siam Society and contributed to the American Women Club’s cultural publication ‘Sawaddi’ – no longer in print but available as a library resource.
The image attempts to record the dignity and strength of the woman.
