Echinopsis Candicans is a species of cactus native to the Monte Desert in Argentina. In Arizona, many of us have these "Argentine Giants” in our yards. Their flowers bloom at night and don’t last more than a day. The flower's short life blesses the air with a delicate fragrance, provides nectar for the bees and is a tasty treat for the native javelinas. Our local squadron of javelinas know just when the cactus buds will open and clandestinely sulk out of the washes at night to devour every last one. This painting is of our cactus, one spring when the javelinas missed their window of opportunity.
