My work has always been about hope, emotion. Being an intuitive artist, I never know what comes before me as I work. In this piece, I was surprised when she came forth. I “colored in her dress” in a way I have never created before in painting.

I always try to find the intention in a piece I’m working through. There are many layers, as I repeatedly put in and took out to find the balance she needed. Her dress became more brilliant than other aspects of the painting, yet very much a part of the story of her life. In this last chapter of my life with all the suffering of others, the loss of great leaders such as Elijah Cummings and John Lewis, I began the journey in a series of paintings to create and honor the lives before us, the lives we’ve lived so that others can become more and remember. With Vivid Memories, I kept her pale to suggest that she is in the past, a wisp of a memory of youth. In her dress as well as in the architectural background thousands of moments weave together to create a beautiful being and an incredible life lived. To me, her wind like transcendent appearance shows the fragility of life.
