Because the sequins are so much heavier than the single, translucent silk leaf, and because the balloon shape leaves the center of the fan unprotected by the guards, fans of this type may not always survive intact.

This fan has been carefully designed. Sequins simultaneously form the swallowtail sparrows' wings and span the top of the translucent, black silk leaf from guard to guard. The sticks, made of simple, ebonized wood, are decorated with piqué point.
